Selfishness

4 ways selfishness sneaks into our daily lives

4 ways selfishness sneaks into our daily lives (1 of 3)

1)     We cling to our old self by not growing and learning by the daily renewing our mind in the Truth of scripture.

-Jesus is not just added to our life when we are saved. Our old life has died, and He becomes our new life.

Ephesians 4:20–24  [20] But that is not the way you learned Christ!— [21] assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, [22] to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, [23] and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, [24] and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (ESV)

2)     Sexual sin is a consistent struggle for us.
-We must realize that All sexual sin is selfish.  It is self-centered, self-pleasing and self-worship.

-We are to be set apart and walk pure before the Lord. We do this by His power, not our own.

1 Thessalonians 4:3–7 [3] For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; [4] that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, [5] not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; [6] that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. [7] For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. (ESV)

3)     The central focus of our new life has strayed from the Gospel and onto self.

-A summary statement on the purpose of the life of a Christian would be this: To know God personally and to make Him known to others.

Colossians 3:12–13  [12] Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, [13] bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.  (ESV)

A Christians life purpose: To know God personally and to make Him known to others.

4)     Our agenda/motivation is to continually improve our self-esteem/self-worth.

-We must see ourselves as we are – both the bad of what we are in the flesh and the glory of what we are in Jesus Christ.

2 Timothy 3:2-4 [2] For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, [3] heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, [4] treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,  (ESV)
