Verses often taken out of context or misused: Philippians 4:13
Philippians 4:13 [13] I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (ESV)
This verse shows up everywhere and is a favorite of professional athletes. Sadly, it is often taken out of context and the Word of God is being mishandled.
How it is misused: It is most often used in the idea that whatever I am about to do then I can surely do it! Win this race, beat the other football team, make this sale, etc… Or even more nefarious, it is used in the false teachings of the prosperity gospel. If I just had enough faith, I could claim this verse and I would then have that million dollars or that mansion. But if I do not get it, well then, I just did not have enough faith (This type of message is so destructive and not biblical).
What is it about? Contentment, and the strength of the Lord to endure any circumstance good or bad.
Look at the context:
Philippians 4:11–12 – [11] Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. [12] I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. [13] I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (ESV)
So, what were the trials that Paul faced? He shares this in:
2 Corinthians 11:24–27 – [24] Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. [25] Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; [26] on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; [27] in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. (ESV)
To complete the context, he concludes this passage with this:
Philippians 4:19–20 – [19] And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. [20] To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. (ESV)
